A Small World Above
A Small World Above explores the feeling of finding a small, peaceful world suspended above the ground. Inspired by clouds and the freedom of birds, the model combines soft cotton forms with delicate origami birds to create a sense of lightness and movement. The cloud ring establishes a gentle, enclosed space, while the birds extend beyond it, gradually opening the composition to the surrounding space. Through the contrast between enclosure and openness, the model expresses how a space can feel both intimate and free, inviting the occupant to pause, look outward, and imagine beyond the boundaries of their immediate surroundings.
Exploring the beauty of simplicity and movement.
Creating this bird model taught me how much can be communicated through simple materials, careful construction, and thoughtful design. Academically, I learned to think about form, proportion, balance, and the relationship between an object and its environment. Folding and shaping the paper required patience and precision, while experimenting with the birds’ placement helped me understand how light, shadow, and movement can transform a space. I also learned that the making process is just as important as the final result, because each adjustment and mistake helped me better understand how the model worked.
I can integrate these lessons into my life and future learning by approaching challenges with more patience, curiosity, and a willingness to experiment. Rather than expecting everything to work perfectly on the first attempt, I can use mistakes as opportunities to improve and develop my ideas. This project reminded me that creativity comes from both imagination and hands-on problem-solving, which I can continue to apply to my interior design work, architectural models, and everyday experiences.
